WHO WE ARE
An all synthetic-turf, multi-use sports complex located in Frederica, Delaware developed to drive tourism and economic development in Kent County. The complex features 12 fields, all of which have lights, a championship stadium with bleacher seating, on-site concessions, restrooms and public Wi-Fi. As a regular host of regional and national tournaments, DE TURF has proven to attract tourists to Kent County while providing a first-class venue for local, recreational use including leagues, camps and clinics.
While tourism and economic development were the catalyst to develop DE TURF, the team at the facility is just as committed to the quality of life of the regional population. The complex serves as “home” to local sports clubs and teams, hosts community events such as an annual Kickball Tournament and Community Days. In addition, DE TURF works with local non-profits including Special Olympics Delaware and Milford Lions Club as well as local high school teams and Latinx organizations.
DE TURF is owned and operated by the Kent County Regional Sports Complex Corporation, a Delaware 501c3 non-profit organization governed by a volunteer board of directors. DE TURF is NOT owned by Kent County, but leases the land that the complex was built on for $1 a year for 60 years.
Kent County has always been a partner to DE TURF. Kent County Levy Court leased the land that the complex was built on for $1 a year for 60 years. In addition, the Levy Court contributed $10,000 to the Greater Kent Committee towards a feasibility study to predict the complex’s value to the community, which projected DE TURF would generate $18 million a year in economic impact to Kent County businesses from hosting 10 tournaments in its first year of operation. In 2017, DE TURF hosted 20 tournaments. In 2018, the complex hosted 40 tournaments and continues to schedule events from February to December. In 2019, DE TURF tournaments generated an economic impact of $34 million to Delaware.
DE TURF is a destination for Kent County. It is not a for-profit, privately owned business or a one-time event. It drives out of state license plates into central Delaware from February through December. Some of these participants fly in from across the country and around the world to attend events hosted by DE TURF. An investment in the complex is an investment in Kent County’s businesses, restaurants, hotels and shopping establishments.
